Opening up new possibilities for collective improvisation
The album includes four tracks, including songs themed around the evolution and end of humankind, as well as the avant-garde arrangement of "A Foggy Day."
Over a creeping bassline, two saxophones unleash sharp melodies, while Mal Waldron's refined piano and Willie Jones' unconventional drumming create a tense ensemble. In "Pithecanthropus Erectus," collective improvisation unfolds through a four-part suite progressing from evolution to extinction, and in "A Foggy Day," a sonic experiment appears where the saxophone imitates a car horn. Intricate themes and destructive improvisation intersect, vividly demonstrating Mingus's innovative compositional sensibility.
