A dance beat led by a trumpet that resonates with the times
Trumpeter Herb Alpert teamed up with producer team Jam & Lewis on this album, which took a major turn away from traditional jazz and pop music towards '80s R&B/dance pop.
The album's sound is dominated by the hard rhythm machine beats and heavy synth bass created by Jam & Lewis. Alpert's trumpet, often muted, plays melodic phrases over the dense digital sound. The vocal track "Diamonds," featuring Janet Jackson, was a success on the R&B charts. This album marks a turning point in his career, as he ventured into new musical territory.
